The GISC is an independent non-statutory organisation that aims to regulate service standards of insurance consumers. Its mission is to ensure that insurance customers are treated fairly. It is ranked inside the top 190,000 most visited sites in the world and is also inside the top 15,000 most viewed sites in the UK*.

The homepage is quite sparse, with the centre of the page dominated by the GISC message stating how it aims to help insurance customers. You can click to get more information about Colombus Direct and the left hand side of the page gives you links to different kinds of travel insurance such as annual and backpacker. The Our Products section gives links to the different types of insurance offered by Colombus which more or less matches the choices on the homepage.

This site really has only one purpose and that’s to give the best insurance quotes to the site’s visitors. For each quote you have to give information like your country of residence, where you intend to go, how many people are going and how long you are staying for. After you have chosen which package is for you, scroll down the page and Colombus gives you a summary of that particular policy. It tells you the benefits of that choice and how much you could be covered for.

Positives and Summary

From what looked like a fairly sparse site suddenly mushrooms into something very useful indeed. The number of things you are covered for by Colombus is very extensive and includes options like hijack coverage and how much you can receive if your trip is suddenly abandoned due to an accident. Each benefit is clearly explained and the approximate amount is given. The amount of insurance you have to pay to be entitled to these benefits is quite small and well worth it.

Of course it was strange to click onto a site that was supposed to be a travel insurance regulator and instead find a company website. This affiliation is doing Colombus no harm at all but to be fair they do seem to offer an outstanding service. They use this site to announce that they were the Insurance Intermediary of the year in 2008. This is an excellent site and will provide you with insurance against every conceivable problem you encounter on holiday.
