Summary and Popularity of Site

Bloomberg claims to be one of the top five most visited sites on the internet and it is ranked just outside the top 500 worldwide. However, its UK version is nowhere near as successful barely getting inside the top 700,000 most visited sites online*. It states that it gives breaking financial, business and economic news from around the world.

Site Design

When you click on their site, you immediately spot the weird colour choices. While a background with some black can look well when mixed effectively with light colours, the Bloomberg site is entirely black with orange writing that makes it extremely difficult to read. The white lettering is perfectly legible, but the orange is a terrible choice and should be changed. The news stories are neatly configured down the page which slightly makes up for the odd colour choice.

Content

Bloomberg is all about finance and a lot of its headline stories concern things that would interest shareholders such as news on U.K stocks and how they are falling, as well as a story regarding Marks & Spencers’ new Chief Executive. The rest of the links will take you to information about the markets, advice on personal finance and general news from the week in business.

The way the articles and sections are laid out makes them easy to find. The only problem you may have is that you will click on one of their specific regions such as Australia, Canada or China and may not be able to navigate quickly back to the U.K site. There is also easy access to the main page that is of primary concern to those interested in the U.S.

Positives and Summary

The articles wouldn’t look out of place in a broadsheet newspaper, and are not for those who like to browse quickly through a piece. They contain complex information and by skimming through, you will have no idea what the whole article was about. Each article comes with a variety of quotes from sources which is a feature of respected newspapers.

The articles are actually in regular black type on white background, which makes you wonder why they decided on the rather unattractive orange type on the homepage for their headlines. Besides this, there is not much to criticise about this site which serves the purpose that it was designed for.
